There are two kinds of articles :

1. Definite Article : The is called Definite article,

· The is used to indicate something that we already know about or something that is common knowledge.

Examples :

- I like the ashtray (The speaker and the listener know which ashtray)

- The girl in the restaurant (The speaker and the listener know which girl)

· The is used for specific sentence.

Example : The rose on that vase is beautiful flower

· The is used for second sentence, but must be followed by noun.

Example : I see a car, the car is for sale

· The is used for singular and plural noun and for all genders

Examples : The boy in the room is studying
The boys in the room are studying
The girl and the boy are studying now

· The is used before adjective represent the class itself

Examples : The old (old people in general)
The lion is a wild animal

· The is used for ordinal numbers before nouns

Example : The first world war

2. Indifinite Article : “A / An” is called Indifinite article,

· “A” is used before a word that beginning of consonant or a vowel with consonant sound.

Examples : a man a one way, a uninersity a European

· “A / An” is used for unspecific sentence

Example : I saw a boy in the street

· “A / An” is used in general statement

Example : A banana is yellow (general; means all banana)

· “A / An” is used before a singular noun which is uncountable noun.

Examples : I bought an apple

I need a visa

· “An” is used before a word that beginning of vowel or a consonant with vowel sound

Examples : an apple an umbrella

an hour an honor
